Einstein on Buddhism

Einstein[Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). While best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"), he received the 1921Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". The latter was pivotal in establishing quantum theory.
Near the beginning of his career, Einstein thought that Newtonian mechanics was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of classical mechanicswith the laws of the electromagnetic field. This led to the development of his special theory of relativity. He realized, however, that the principle of relativity could also be extended to gravitational fields, and with his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916, he published a paper on the general theory of relativity. He continued to deal with problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of particle theoryand the motion of molecules. He also investigated the thermal properties of light which laid the foundation of the photon theory of light. In 1917, Einstein applied the general theory of relativity to model the structure of the universe as a whole.
Great scientist Einstein's writings on religion are also very important and this is one of his small piece on Buddhism.]
“Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spiritual; and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity.
“If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism.

Kenzo Tange Master Plan for Lumbini

When U Thant visited Nepal in April 1967 as Secretary-General of the United Nations, he proposed the development of Lumbini into a major centre of pilgrimage. This was followed by a UNDP consultant mission in December 1969, which led to a report that established the basis for further planning around Lumbini.

In 1970, the International Committee for the Development of Lumbini (ICDL) was set up comprising initially of 13 members and later expanded to 16 member states. The initial member states were Afghanistan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Later, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Republic of Korea also joined. At the national level, the Lumbini Development Committee was formed. ICDL initiated the preparation of the Master Plan for Lumbini, which was conceptualized by Kenzo Tange starting from 1972. The Kenzo Tange Master Plan was finalized and approved in 1978.

Promoting Nepal as birth place of Buddha and country of Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha)

PetetionWould you collect 200 signatures to PROMOTE Nepal as Birthplace of Lord Buddha & Land Of Mt. Everest (Sagaramatha) ?
~ Prem Guragain, Los Angeles, California
It might sound selfish or impractical but this is the truth: we might live without food, water for few days but can't live without self-respect. Even small children like to be appreciated, cared and loved. All grown up people have tendency to be appreciated and respected for anything they do.
We all crave for appreciation and hence do much social work, volunteering work, write, sing, speak etc. etc. How about our National PRIDE & RESPECT in the world?
We definitely would love to get RESPECT for the motherland and hence, the PETITION was started.
We started the PETITION: "Promote: Buddha was born in Nepal & Mt. Everest is in Nepal (www.nepalesepride.org)" in July, 2012 with confidence that we will collect 1,000,000 signatures from around the world and correct the fact that has been recorded wrong. Over seven billion people in
the world will know these facts about NEPAL (Never Ending Peace And Love), the country that lies between India and China as many people in the world have never heard of Nepal even though they know Lord Buddha's teachings and Mt. Everest (Sagaramatha) being the highest peak in the world.

Lumbini Master Plan

Posted by Ram Kumar Shrestha on December 10, 2011
The United Nations Development Programme contributed nearly one million dollars for preparation of a Master Plan for the development of Lumbini, including numerous engeering and archaeological studies. The plan, which was completed in 1978, has as its objecive to restore an area of about 7.7 kM2, to be known as the Lumbini Garden, centering on the garden and the Ashoka Pillar, with an additional area of 64.5 km2 to be developed in its support.

Late U Thant
According to architect Kenzo Tange, “the overall intent is to reinforce the symbolic entity of the Lumbini Garden in its simplicity and clarity’.. Development will provide for visitors to Lumbini – pilgrims and tourists – and will also support such complementary activities as residence of monks, research, international meetings and teachings.
Masterplan Map
Within the plan for the development of Lumbini Garden, there are three main components:
1. New Lumbini Village
2. The Cultural Centre/Monastic Zone
3. The Sacred Garden
The design is oriented north-south,with Lumbini Village and Cultural Centre north, and the focus of the design – the Sacred Garden – to the. south. On either side of the axis towards its southern end are the monastic enclaves. The entire development is tied together by a central link comprised of a walkway and a canal.

Buddha Purnima

Buddha Jayanti or also known as Buddha Purnima is the most sacred festivals of Buddhist. Buddha Purnima (Buddha Birthday) is celebrated in remembrance Lord Buddha. Lord Buddha is the founder of Buddhism. This day is the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. It falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month (month of Vaisakh) i.e. April or May. This day commemorates three important events of Buddha’s life
- His birth in 623 BC.
- His enlightment i.e. attainment of supreme wisdom, in 588 BC.
- His attainment of Nirvana i.e. the complete extinction of his self at the age of 80.
This day is a thrice blessed day. Lord Buddha is considered the ninth avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu (Preserver in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer). Gautam Buddha “lived and died in about the fifth century before the Christian era”. Buddha means “enlightened one” – someone who is completely freefrom all faults and mental obstructions.
Gautam Buddha was not a god and the philosophy of Buddhism does not entail any theistic world-view. The teachings of the Buddha are solely to liberate human beings from the misery and sufferings of life.
According to the Buddhism, sorrow and desire are the main cause of all the evil and suffering of this world. Lord Buddha advocated the Eightfold Path consisting of precepts like right conduct, right motive, right speech, right effort, right resolve, right livelihood, right attention and right meditation to gain mastery over suffering. It is only after following this path one can reach the ultimate aim of Nirvana. Nirvana is the transcendental state of complete liberation. Gautama Buddha lived and taught in northern Inda in the 6th Century B.C.

Buddhist Teachings

Buddhism is a philosophy of life expounded by Gautama Buddha (“Buddha” means “enlightened one”), who born inLumbini, Nepal in the 6th Century B.C. The Buddha was not a god and the philosophy of Buddhism does not entail any theistic world-view. The teachings of the Buddha are aimed solely to liberate sentient beings from suffering.
The Basic Teachings of Buddha which are core of Buddhism are-
The Three Universal Truth
The Four Noble Truth
The Noble Eightfold Path
In Buddhism, the law of karma, says “for every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful.” Therefore, the law of Karma teaches that responsibility for unskillful actions is born by the person who commits them.
After his enlightenment, he went to the Deer Park near the holy city of Benares and shared his new understanding with five holy men. They understood immediately and became his disciples. This marked the beginning of the Buddhist community. For the next forty-five years, the Buddha and his disciples went from place to place in India spreading the Dharma, his teachings. Their compassion knew no bounds, they helped everyone along the way, beggars, kings and slave girls. At night, they would sleep where they were; when hungry they would ask for a little food.

Leaflet to distribute on Kapilvastu Day

About Kapilvastu
Kapilvastu, the capital of a famed kingdom in two and a half millennia ago, is believed to be named after Hindu theological sage and founder of Sankhya Philosophy — Philosophy of duality of consciousness and phenomenal realm of matter — Kapila.  This place received further fame for in its famous gardens of Lumbini, Queen of Kapilvastu, Maya Devi, gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as Lord Buddha, in 623 BC. The place of former palace of Suddhodhana have been excavated near Taulihawa in Kapilvastu district of Nepal some 20 km away from Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha and a famous place of pilgrimage to Buddhists and Hindus alike. – This place is also famous as being the birthplace of two popular cultures of Nepal, Awadhi and Tharu.
Almost neglected after 7th century AD, Lumbini and consequently Kapilvastu got limelight after an amateur archaeologist Khadga Sumsher Jangha Bahadur Rana unearthed Ashoka pillar and German archaeologist Dr. Alois Anton Fuhrer verified it on December 1, 1896. Lumbini, which is 303 kilometres south-west from Kathmandu, hosts 138 places related to Shakyamuni Buddha.  These 138 places include, garden of Lumbini, Devdaha, Ashoka Stambha (Pillar), Tilaurakot,  etc. At present era of rising disparities among people, armed conflicts, and discord, Kapilvastu, which brought up the first credible messenger of peace, equality and social justice has utmost significance.
Famous Pilgrims
Emperor Ashoka
Emperor Ashoka, a warrior turned propagator of non-violence, tolerance, love, truth and vegetarianism is one of the main instrumental to spread Buddhism in Asia. He visited Lumbini in 249 BC and has erected four stupas and a stone pillar. The pillar bears his inscription written in Brahmi script and Pali language translates to “King Piyadasi (Ashoka), beloved of devas, in the 20 year of the coronation, himself made a royal visit, Buddha Sakyamuni having been born here, a stone railing was built and a stone pillar erected to the Shakyamuni having been born here, Lumbini village taxes are reduced and entitled to the eight part (only)” in English.
Fa-Hsien
Famous Chinese traveller Fa-Hsien, who travelled India and Nepal on foot, has visited Lumbini in the 5th century AD. The Chinese pilgrim saw the nativity tree, the bathing pond (Puskarni) and the well among other monuments in Lumbini.
Hiuen-Tsang
Hiuen-Tsang, a famous Buddhist monk and Chinese traveller visited Lumbini in 7th century. In his visit to Kapilvastu, he had seen seen a pillar near the old Ashoka tree that Buddha is said to have been born under and ruins of stupas.
U Thant
Then UN Secretary General U Thant visited Lumbini in 1967. During his visit he made Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) an international cause.
Lumbini Now
Considering this fact expressed by famous pilgrims like Emperor Ashoka, Fa-Hsien and Hiuen-Tsang and the inscriptions verified by Dr. Alois Anton Fuhrer, then UN Secretary General U Thant in 1967 proposed to initiate Lumbini Development project. UNESCO has listed Lumbini, — proper place in Kapilvastu — where Buddha was born, as world heritage site in 1997.
Lumbini is being developed as international Buddhist pilgrimage and peace centre. The development activities are being ushered by a 13-nation Lumbini Development Committee formed in 1970 and hard works of Tribhuwan University, Institute of Engineering, and Pulchowk Campus. Several monuments are of great importance at this place, including Ashoka pillar, Mayadevi temple and Bathing Pond that Mayadevi took bath in before giving birth to Shakyamuni Buddha.
Attractions
The Maya Devi Temple

The Maya Devi Shrine complex is the heart of all monuments at this holy site. The complex also bears the testimony of several layers of construction over the centuries. The main object of worship here is the nativity sculpture. The restored Maya Devi Temple was reopened on May 16, 2003 on the 2547th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. Government of Nepal and LDT jointly restored the temple. The ground floor consists of the remains of the foundations of the early Maya Devi Temple that dates back to 3rd century BC. The sanctum sanatorium is the birth spot of the Lord Buddha.
The Marker Stone
This stone conglomerate located deeply buried in the sanctum sanatorium pinpoints the exact location of the birth of Lord Buddha. This was discovered after meticulous excavation of the Maya Devi Temple site in 1996. The exact size of Marker Stone is 70×40×10 cm. This is now covered with a bulletproof glass.
The Nativity Sculpture
The image of Maya Devi, also known as the Nativity sculpture dated back to 4th century AD, depicts Maya Devi, standing and holding the branch of a tree with her right hand for support. Next to her Gautami Prajapati, her own sister, in supporting posture at the time of delivery. The newly born prince Siddhartha is standing upright on a lotus pedestal, with two celestial figures receiving him.
The Puskarni or Holy Pond

Adjacent to the Ashoka Pillar on the southern side, there is the Puskarni, believed to be the holy pond in which Maya Devi took bath just before giving birth to the Lord Buddha. It is also the site where the infant prince Siddhartha was given his first purification bath. The pond has terraced steps and is riveted by beautifully layered bricks.
The Asoka Pillar
The Ashoka Pillar bears the first epigraphic evidence relating to the birthplace of Lord Buddha. It is the most noteworthy monument and an authentic historic document of birthplace of Lord Buddha in Lumbini. The inscription engraved by Emperor Ashoka is still intact and testifies the authenticity of the birthplace.
Tilaurakot
Tilaurakot, childhood home of Lord Buddha, lies 25 kilometres west of Lumbini is another significant archaeological and tourist site of Nepal. It is situated nearby to Shivgarh village of Kapilvastu municipality. Here used to be palace of King Suddhodhan where prince Siddhartha had spent 29 years of his life.
Devdaha
Devdaha is maternal home of Mayadevi, mother of Bhagawan Buddha. It is situated at 30 Kilometres east of Lumbini in Rupandehi District of Nepal.
Niglihawa
Niglihawa, 7 kilometres west of Taulihawa, is an very important archaeological site where Kanakmuni Buddha was born. Emperor Ashoka visited Niglihawa 15 years before he visited Lumbini. Niglihawa has part of another pillar erected by Ashoka dedicating it to Kanakmuni Buddha. Aurorakot situated near Niglihawa has huge ancient brick structure.

  5. Reading Revellers’ Club at Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) has selected Buddha, Kapilvastu and Lumbini as theme of their next meeting on December 5, 2009 to express its solidarity to Kapilvastu day.
  6. Ram Kumar Shrestha – located at London (UK) is mobilizing his more than 500 friends through emails and social networking websites. He has already made the day popular by publishing materials online at http://nepalisamachar.com/?p=4975, http://www.nepalarab.com/articles_view.php?id=509; http://nepalarab.com/press_view.php?id=112 and so many others (most of the links given below). He also has written to Ambassadors and Consul Generals requesting their solidarity in this programme.
  7. Some friends decided to write poems for this programme. Relevant poems, songs, bhajans and articles most well come. I would like to request again to include the logo with them while keeping them as note. Use of logo will have lots of importance and one of the advantages is to make impact study job very easy and time saving.
  8. North American Nepali Students Association (that covers USA and Canada) has agreed to morally support the Kapilvastu campaign.
  9. To save your time (who are too busy and cannot manage time to find materials from internet for Kapilvastu Day), we managed to create this link http://worldamity.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/buddha-and-buddhism-related-materials/ (This is for Facebook and Twitter programme)
  10. Some Feedbacks:
    “One friend was telling me that he liked the logo and made his computer’s desktop background. hopefully that day will be really successful.” Sujan Neupane (Sydney)
    Slogan : ‘A campaign for finding the peace all over the world.’ –Dinesh Dahal (Journalist)

Update:
1. Bhanu Poudyal is mobilizing people in USA and Canada for Kapilavastu Day. Nepali Students through their organization in University of British Columbia are thinking of organizing information seminar and leaflet distribution on that day. One book club in Vancouver is having programme on December 5 on Lumbini and Lord Buddha (people will not have time on December 1 as it is weekday)
2. Sherpa Kyidug and friends from Toronto are also trying to do something in solidarity.
3. I am selecting some friends from different countries for the impact study of the programme. Besides them anybody, if interested, could send impact study and everybody’s name will be in the main report with the link of their reports. The study report to be sent will be very simple, not so complicated. I will develop format and let you know in the next update.
4. Some friends decided to write poems for this programme. Relevant poems, songs, bhajans and articles most well come. I would like to request again to include the logo with them while keeping them as note. Use of logo will have lots of importance and one of the advantages is to make impact study job very easy and time saving.
5. The numbers of messages and mails I am receiving show that many friends very active for this programme. I noticed some friends already started postings for this programme.
6. I wrote to all Ambassadors and Consul Generals requesting their solidarity in this programme, but 25 mails returned (I used the addresses from ministry of Foreign affairs web site) . Very strange! In new Nepal, working system still old. Nothing updated. I tried to call in couple of numbers, some numbers did not work and where I was able to contact, I could not go furthermore due to not familiar languages.
7. We want any sort of programme be organised in Kapilavastu on that day. We are trying for this but still could not get success. I am requesting a guy from Kapilavastu for his initiaton, but he is not in Nepal. Anyway he is trying. If anybody could help us to organise any sort of programme there in solidarity, it could be great help.
8. Only in FB I am communicating with ab 500 friends through 26 threads. So pls do not make any note for minor mistakes in the language as I am doing everything in rush.

Some important information:

Part of circulation among about 500 in Facebook (4 Novemeber):
कपिलबस्तु दिबसको कार्यक्रम प्रभाबकारी बनाउने केही उपायहरु:
१. उस्तै उस्तै किसिमका सामग्रीहरु सकभर संगसंगै नपरोस भन्ने कुरामा सकभर होसियार हुन प्रयास गर्ने;
२. एउटै सामग्री दोहोर्याउँदा समय अलिक फरक पार्ने;
३. सकभर बिबाद निम्त्याउने किसिमका सामग्री प्रबाह नगरने । कथंकदाचित त्यस किसिमका सामग्री कसैबाट प्रबाह भैहालेको खण्डमा बिबाद गर्नतिर नलागी संबन्धित ब्यक्तिलाई Chat मार्फत त्यस किसिमका सामग्री प्रबाह नगरन आग्रह गर्ने; (यो बुँदाको संभाबना कमै छ बिषयबस्तुको प्रकृतिको कारण );
४ . कार्यक्रम बिस्वभरि नै गरिने भएको तर अस्ट्रेलियामा रात परेर सुत्ने बेलामा बेलायत/यूरोपतिर बिहान हुने र अमेरिकामा त सुतिरहने समय हुने भएका कारण अस्ट्रेलियामा हुने साथीहरुले सुत्न जानु अघि आफूसंग भएका राम्रा सामग्री नेपालतिरको साथीहरुलाई मेल गरेर पठाइदिने, नेपालबाट बेलायत/यूरोप, बेलायत/यूरोपबाट अमेरिका पास गर्न सकियो भने अझ राम्रो हुन सक्थ्यो यद्यपि यसो नगरदा पनि समयान्तरको कारण पछि पर्ने साथीहरुले पहिलाका साथीहरुद्धारा (आबस्यक परेको खण्डमा ) प्रबाह गरिएका सामग्रीहरु हेरेर त्यसैलै दोहोर्याउन पनि नसकिने भने होइन ;
५. करीब १ हप्ता अघिदेखि नै थाहा नपाउने तथा प्रत्यक्ष संपर्कमा नरहेकाहरुलाई समेत कार्यक्रमबारे जानकारी होस भनेर सतर्कताको लागि सांकेतिक पोस्टिङहरु शुरु गर्न थाल्ने ;
६. कथंकदाचित समयको पाबन्दीले गर्दा कपिलबस्तु दिबसको लागि इण्टरनेट मार्फत सान्दर्भिक सामग्रीहरु खोज्ने अनुकूलता नमिलेको खण्डमा यो लिंक http://oaks.nvg.org/saybud.html प्रयोग गरी बुद्धका भनाइहरु यसबाट लिएर पोस्टिङ् गर्न सक्नु हुनेछ;
७. प्रत्येक पोस्टिङमा लोगो प्रयोग गर्न नबिर्सन अनुरोध छ । यस्ले कार्यक्रममा एक रुपता ल्याउन, यदि त्यस्तै परेर थाहा नपाएकाहरुको लागि पनि एउटै जस्तो कुरा देखेर सतर्क हुन र जिज्ञासा राख्न र होसियार हुन अनि सामग्री संकलन गर्न चाहने र कार्यक्रमको प्रभाब अध्ययन गर्नेहरुको लागि यो निकै उपयोगी हुनेछ । त्यसैले पोस्टिङमा लोगो राख्न बिर्सिएको खण्डमा त्यस्लाई हटाएर पुन: अर्को पोस्टिङ् गर्न अनुरोध गरिन्छ;
